The Elephant Trunk Nebula (IC 1396A) is an
elongated globule residing within the larger IC 1396 nebula in Cepheus. The small blue reflection nebula in the
top of the trunk is vdB 142.
Located 2,450 light-years from Earth, the
nebula is shown here in narrowband utilizing 23 hours of data mapped to the Hubble palette where SII is assigned to red, H-alpha to green, OIII to blue. |
